Keynote for Mac OS X (Visual QuickStart Guide) Reviews
15 FebruaryKeynote for Mac OS X (Visual QuickStart Guide)
Tired of the lackluster graphics and dull, canned look of PowerPoint presentations? At last you have an alternative: Apple Computer’s graphics-intensive Keynote presentation software. If you give presentations on a regular basis, you’ll want to start leveraging the power of Keynote immediately—dragging and dropping graphics, digital photos, QuickTime movies, and audio into your slide shows; creating animations, shadows, and labels for your charts and tables; producing dynamic drop shadows and cinematic transitions between slides; and more—and this Visual QuickStart Guide will show you how.
Veteran presenter, QuickStart author, and Mac guru Tom Negrino makes it easy to dive in and start creating high-impact presentations in no time by providing step-by-step instructions peppered with plenty of screen shots, tips, and sidebars. You’ll learn how to use Keynote’s professionally designed “themes” to create coordinated backgrounds, fonts, colors, bullets, tables, and charts in seconds. And if you’re interested in creating a custom look, you’ll find plenty of instructions for that as well. The best part? You don’t need to be a graphics artist to produce visually stunning (and stunningly effective) presentations with Keynote.Plugable USB 2.0 2 Port Hub
- Standard two-port USB 2.0 complaint USB hub controller chipset
- Compatible with all USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices
- Supports full data rates of 1.5/12/480 Mbps
- USB bus powered
- Compact, in-line design to minimize cable clutter
Featuring a clean, compact design, this standard USB hub enables two devices to share a single available USB port with full USB 2.0 compatibility and performance.
Common Uses
Common uses include connecting both keyboard and mouse via a single USB cable, for industrial environments where space is a premium, and for any situation where a simple USB 2 port splitter is required.
Power
This bus-powered hub shares available power (500mA) from the single upstream port to each of the two downstream ports. Because power is shared, devices connected via the hub should be low powered (keyboards, mice, etc), or self-powered (printers, powered hubs, powered external hard drives).

This recent image taken in is a good example of how an understanding of techniques within the digital workflow can change the outcome of your image in the most positive ways. Here is a color image which based on the tonality was pre-determined to make a nice black and white. In this case we used Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2 to change the photograph into a black and white fine art image that might sell in a gallery. First we moved the Dynamic Brightness to a lower value and increased the Soft Contrast to an increase of 30 percent. And finally we increase the Structure slider to increase localized details and give the look of more textures.

Often a portrait needs a simple enhancement. Here we added a little help from Nik Software Coor Efex Pro 4. First, we direct the viewer’s attention by adding Darken Lighten Center to lower the brightness of the edges. Next, we added the filter called Remove Color Cast to reduce the warmth in the image. Finally, Image Border was added suing selection #4 in the default position.
Sample Photos from the Authors: Los Angeles, California Building

This beautiful structure in Los Angeles was the perfect example of how a little increase in control can elevate image quality. Here we again use Nik Software Color Efex Pro 4 and a filter called Brilliance and Warmth. First we moved the saturation slider to the right to increase the value and then also increased the warmth slider by moving to the right. We finished it off by sliding the newest feature, Perceptual Saturation, to the right to add a unique color value to the image. The difference from before to after shows an increase in image quality and took a total editing time about approximately twenty seconds.

The ComSoc Guide to Managing Telecommunications Projects (The ComSoc Guides to Communications Technologies)
12 JanuaryThe ComSoc Guide to Managing Telecommunications Projects (The ComSoc Guides to Communications Technologies)
A concise, authoritative guide to twenty-first-century telecom project management
As the telecommunications industry experiences ongoing rapid change, projects remain the driver of the industry’s evolution. Projects continue to be crucial to the success of the companies offering products and services in this area. Written by a prominent leader in the field, this pocket guide provides an overview of the telecommunications environment as it has evolved over the past few years, illustrating the need for project management and providing a basic understanding of project management concepts. Going beyond standard processes and techniques to address the special—and changing—needs of the telecom industry, the book then demonstrates the application of project management best practices in the field.
Beginning with a clear definition of a project and an outline of the players involved, the guide then helps you set your project and business objectives (and explains why they are not always the same). It explains how to analyze your project’s scope and manage procurement. Next, various aspects of project risks are reviewed, along with communications requirements. From here, you’ll delve into some of the core concepts of project management—building and maintaining a schedule, managing the costs, and keeping on top of developments. Then the task of managing people is explored, addressing management styles, team building, leadership, workloads, and rewards.
The guide illustrates, via sample projects, the application of project management—as advocated by the Project Management Institute—to the special needs of the telecom industry. The chapters work through three telecom projects from different corporate perspectives: the first involves the introduction of a new wireless technology, which will allow telecom services to remote cities using fourth-generation cellular technology; the second evolves an existing landline network from circuit switched to IP-based, delivering Internet services; and the third designs and installs a corporate customer network showcasing services offered by the industry.
People in both line and staff functions at telecommunications companies who manage either large or small projects will find the featured project management techniques and their real-world applications invaluable. In addition, telecom companies, manufacturers and suppliers who serve the telecom industry, Internet providers, and companies that make products for the datacom industry will also benefit from this brief, accessible guide.
